Hurricane Irma Update

This video of Sanibel shows the island ready for guests immediately after hurricane Irma .

We also published this letter for guests immediately after the hurricane about our worries as the storm approached and relief when it passed without causing damage…

Well…. we survived a major hurricane coming through without damage…. but we aren’t afraid to admit… we were really scared!  As it came closer and closer and the chance it could change course changed from a probability to a possibility to a needed miracle we could do nothing but prepare the cottages for one huge storm and then watch  her approach from our safe spots away …. and pray.  Irma plowed into the Keys with all her might and we thought of our friends down there and felt helpless.  Then she made landfall south of Naples around Marco Island  and we all collectively held our breath.  The course showed her coming into Naples then out off open water and directly on top of Sanibel within the following hours.  Suddenly a wobble to the East caught our attention.  Could we really be getting our miracle?  The answer was yes.  By passing just to our East… and we mean JUST to our East, Sanibel missed the brunt of Irma and most importantly did not taste her storm surge.  We have returned to our beloved island to find nothing worse than what a normal tropical storm can do to the island.  We have some tree trimming… we have some debris clean up… but we have survived the storm virtually unscathed.  That is also true of most of the island.  As power is slowly restored to the island in sections, stores and restaurants begin to come back up.  We will collect up the tree branches, and skim the leaves out of the pool.  We will follow that up with putting the patio furniture out on the decks and we will look forward to seeing all of you in the upcoming weeks and months just as originally planned.

This could have been a very different letter I am writing.  The thought of losing Seahorse Cottages was almost impossible to allow into my brain and so I’m glad that even though that reality came so close, I had to allow that thought in…I did not need to keep it there too long.

With every happy story of escape there are sad stories of devastation in the Caribbean and Keys and other parts of Florida.  Please take a moment to remember all those who did not fare as well as we did.  There but for the grace of God ………
